The boxes always had the memory, the upgrade merely enables it. So, standard in all VS models running software version 5.0 or later, instead of the previous 30 minutes, there is now approximately 2 hours of memory. You can always add on more memory with optional memory cards. You can add an additional 1 hr, 2 hrs, 4.5 hrs, and 9 hrs to the built in memory.
